My buddy recently bought an 04 KXF pretty cheap and then realized he had to dump a bunch of money into the motor He tried starting it and it back fired through the intake, catching it on fire We tried cleaning the carb out but after reading around it sounds like these bikes are really picky I'm a two stroke guy He had the sent out to have the valve seats cut and titanium valves put in it.

After that a shop told him that he didnt have any compression so he put a new piston and rings in it. The bike still had a hard time starting and would only idle with the choke on.

For some reason i was only able to kick start the bike. We drove an hour and 45 minutes to go ride and the bike started overheating pretty bad so we called it a day.

After doing a bit of research i checked the hot start and it had a bunch of dirt in it. After cleaning the hot start it seemed to start better with the choke on, but still would not idle without the choke.

After reading around heres what i plan to do. Disassemble carb and clean thoroughly. Check Valve Clearance.

Your pilot jet is most likely clogged. You will need to clean the center orfice of this jet and make sure the starter jet is also clean. I would also double check the cam timing. It can be off a tooth and still start but will be hard to start and can over heat.

It controles the idle fuel mixture. CCW richens and CW leans it out at idle.I have recently encountered an issue with my KXF It has aapproximately hours total on it, had a new piston and cam chain on it at about 60 hours and I checked the valve clearances about 10 hours ago and everything was perfect.

Bike was running great for the first few outings this year since everything was checked but at the last moto 2 rides ago I heard a slight knocking type noise. It didn't sound rotational more of a tapping noise like a valve or something but everything was running ok, no misfires or pops and power delivery was perfectly ok. Just to be sure I took the cam cover off and checked the timing and the exhaust looked to be a tooth out which was odd. I re-checked the valve clearances and the right hand exhaust was way out.

The gap should be 0. When I took the camshafts off to get to the shimsthe valve caps on the intake slipped off like they should but the exhaust caps were getting caught on a lip on the cylinder head.

I noticed the oil way on the exhaust side looked quite a bit thinner than on the inlet and also some evidence of scoring on the right hand side of the exhaust camshaft perch even though it feels smooth to the touch. The photos above show what I am talking about and in one I have circled where this lip had formed that was stopping me from getting the valve caps off easily, had to use a vice grip and some cloth to get them past the lip.

I am worried the bike has been starved of oil and has caused the exhaust camshaft to wear on the cylinder head cause the oil way to get heated up and caused this lip and also may explain why the valve clearance was so far out on one side.

The oil was changed about 3 hours ago. Can any of you give any suggestions as to the possible extent of the damage and can the cylinder head be repaired?

I am still confused as to how the timing jumped which possibly caused all of this or if the timing jumping was as a result of possible oil starvation.

Paw Paw Sure looks like an oil starvation issue. From what I have seen the head may not be repairable with the cam journal damage, so it may need replacing. I have seen this many times. It most likely was caused by an oil leak at the filter cover due to and o ring failure or leak. The cam journals are the first to show the signs. In most cases nothing else was hurt to any great extent. With the cam journal dry it will allow the cam to jump up and down and cause the damage you have shown.

This will also allow the valve clearances to be all over the lot. I have not seen this cause the cam to jump timing. THat is most likely caused by a worn out cam chain. Paw Paw. Paw Paw wrote:. Could dirt or grit have blocked the oil jet? You mentioned the head probably needing replacing, what do you reckon about the camshaft? There is no obvious damage but I know everything is down to thous when talking about engine components.

Thread starter komakazic15 Start date Oct 24, I can't seem to get the timing dots that line up to the head correct. If the right one is on then the left one is off!! It seems like the left cam is off one tooth but it also looks like if I move it, the dot will be back to far past the head.

Also does the exhaust have to be hooked to the head while trying to get it to crank? James Staff member. There should be 12 links between the two cams Now I presume your talking about a KXF??? On my old KXF the dots weren't perfect but if you haven't replaced the cam chain that would also help. How old is the cam chain?First time I open the valve cover new bike. It's at TDC but the chain links seems weird.

Like my left dot is between two pins instead of being the top pin of a 1st link. Not sure if the chain links matter but the dots on the cams align exactly with the cylinder.

Just did my first valve clearance adjustment. Photos are before touching anything. Sometimes camwheels have slipped on the cam - if this is the case you still have the marks on the chainwheels aligned but the actual cam timing is out.

By the way, is it normal to have different sound in idle while clutch lever pulled all in VS not pulling clutch lever? Not loud, very subtle but I notice the difference. And they are now in perfect spec.

Does this mean my timing is good? Does valve clearance has anything to do with timing? I mean, if the timing was off, was I able to check valve clearance correctly and adjust it within spec?Quick Links.
